With no help from the elves

October 7, 2009 By crafterhours 3 Comments

Today I finally tried out this shoe tutorial that’s been thumbtacked to my idea bulletin board for almost a year now.  Thankfully, I have 4 preggers friends who get to profit from my procrastination, since my own baby is about 6 months too big.

It doesn’t look like it in the pictures, but I used a royal purple cotton (gah! purple!  I know!  But they’re not for me, they’re not for me…) for the outside of the shoes and a cute coordinating flannel for the lining.  You don’t really end up seeing the lining because these shoes are so tiny, but I know it’s there :)

This was my first experience sewing on leather and it worked great!  I used a size 90/14 needle, lengthened my stitches, and it went through like butter.  And no, that contrast stitching was not supposed to be a design element, but I didn’t ever EVER think I would have a reason to own purple thread.

Be careful, these shoes are kinda addicting.  The embellishment/fabric options are endless and did I mention they are SO tiny?  Make sure you have people to give them to or get pregnant before you make a pair.  If you plan to make them after a baby is born, they will outgrow them before you get around to it.  Because they’re tiny.
