It’s a big fat round-up of twill tape ideas and inspiration, put together by us, for YOU! (You’re welcome.)
Where shall we begin? Let’s start with Shannon. She proved to be as big of a twill tape geek as we are! She serged AND stitched twill tape to make this adorable skirt trim (it’s for sale in her etsy shop!):
She sandwiched two strips together and joined them with a decorative stitch to make dress straps:
And she used it to cover a hair clippie and topped it with an adorable butterfly!
Cheryl at Sew Can Do used some twill tape in her happy taggie toy!
KJ at Let’s Go Fly a Kite took advantage of twill tape’s non-fraying properties to use it as elastic casing inside a hat. Such a time saver!
Mary from Needle ‘n Thread shows us how to bind an embroidery hoop with twill tape to maintain better tension on the fabric.
West Elm has gorgeous stitched twill tape pillows here. (Adrianna: I know what my next twill tape project will be!)
Angry Chicken used twill tape as ties for a whole bunch of aprons here.
Martha uses twill tape to embellish a cute pet silhouette tote bag.
And our personal favorite: you know the phrase “cut through the red tape”? Well, it came from the practice of securing government documents by tying them up with red twill tape. And now you can wear a bit of that history in these fashionable red twill tape earrings, from the National Archives eStore. (or, you know, make your own!)
We also wanted to reprint a few creative comments we received regarding twill tape ideas this week:
“S” said:
– bracelet
– collar for stuffed toy
– collar for stuffed toy
– “fairy wand” streamers
– barrettes or headband
– crayon pouch/roll
– name tag on a doctor’s white coat…for dress-up, yano! Any occupational dress up really. With Velcro…ooo, I am giving myself ideas!
– Label for inside of jacket
– washable cup cozy, with terry, for those nice cold drinks that summer demands
Great ideas, ladies! S, do you want to reveal your true identity so we can thank you properly? :)
And here are some further ideas that the Crafterhours Empire wasn’t able to crank out in time for Twill Tape Week (it’s a small empire).
- Bind a quilt
- Make shirt collar or sleeve ties
- Use it for a drawstring in clothing
- Weave it together to make a placemat (oh, we SO wanted to do this one. Anyone want to try it and send us pics?)
- Use it to string banners/buntings
- Add a hanging loop to store-bought dishtowels that don’t come with one (don’t you hate that?!)

I like the woven placemat idea. I might have to try that one myself. It could be fun to do with the kids.

I have really enjoyed this week and see lots of things to do with twill tape now. Hoping that I still have some in the sewing room and have not passed it on to others to make room for all the other goodies I collect. Will be checking and trying many of these super ideas. Thanks for sharing all of this fun with us.

Well, soon as I figure how to un-anonym -ize myself I will, but I can’t seem to find where I made myself “S”. A real laugh, since in the effort to do away with the minute swearing we do, we’ve been weaning off the actual swears to saying just the first letter of the swear. So, there you have it, I have turned myself into a big “S”. These are funny jokes, as my toddler would say. I am Shalimar, BTW. Always a treat to stop by and visit! You’re superstars!

Hi S! I mean Shalimar. My husband and I did the same thing, so I almost fell off of my chair some years ago when I heard a five-year-old working on a project say with frustration “I just need to finish this S!” and she was creating an S with beads on paper. Bahahaha. Thanks for commenting! Susan
