Made with one long piece of double-fold bias tape. Do you still call it bias tape when it’s made from knit and not cut on the bias? Let’s just pretend. Ironing this stuff to make it useable is not an easy task. I decided that I was quite sure I didn’t want to do it more than once so I made enough for two dresses in one go. And it’s a good thing I did, because I had to stitch it on twice to get it right due to a brief moment of distraction that resulted in a big fat fail the first time.
Heading outside to take some photos, I decided to try to convince K that grass angels were a thing. I think she bought it.
Briefly, anyway.
She thought the request to “wiggle like a noodle” was funner.
The back and the front are exactly the same. Gosh I love how she still has finger dimples. I’ll miss those.
There’s just one spot on the back where the bias tape needed to overlap. The underarm sections have a 1/4″ bias trim.
Not that K notices.
The bottom, shown here in a “FREEZE!” moment, is unfinished. It’s knit that won’t fray. It’ll curl a bit. I wish I’d been more attentive and made the bottom layer slightly slimmer than the top. Come to think of it, that’d be easy to go back and do.
Stretchy, simple dresses are perfect for ladylike (?) ninja moves. As demonstrated here.
And running, of course.
Your dress is very cute. Love the fabric. In an odd confluence of taste and timing, I sewed a peasant top (using a favored tutorial on this site) for my niece from the exact same fabric last night.
very cute, I really like how that neckline hangs in the back! Perfect, simple little detail that doesn’t scream for attention but gets it anyways!
I have that fabric, too, and have never done anything with it. I need to pull that out!
oh… and when it’s made of knit and not cut on the bias, it’s not bias tape- it’s called binding.
Darling, both K and the dress!
Adorable!! Great photos, and super cute model!
So cute! I read somewhere if you use spray starch on the knit while ironing, it will make it easier to work with. I have tried it and it does help…
Lovely dress…i ♥ the spring colors!
That’s a great dress, with a kind of 60’s vibe with the curve of the collar and the spots. Far Out! My girl would love it too. x
I want that dress for me!! :) I am in my third trimester and that looks so comfy!!
Ooooo I love!! I want for meeee! (you can see my excitement by all the multiple letter misspellings I used)
