The Best Part of the Fancy Hotel

February 5, 2012 By crafterhours 4 Comments

Sharing a hotel room for Alt with a bloggy friend who was also escaping the mommy routine was lots of fun. She took advantage of the spa, we both enjoyed room service, the huge beautiful bathroom with two separate vanities so that we each had our own makeup/hair space, turndown service and the fact that without curious hands around, we could leave -whatever-  -wherever- and it was still there when we went back for it. The hotel has bars, a restaurant, a gelato/sweets shop, grownup and convenience shops, fabulous chandeliers with funky glass… you’d think something uber sophisticated would’ve been my pick for the best part. My favorite? The toy store.

Jou Jou is amazing.

It’s not a chain. It was designed and built just for the Grand America. And the wealth of beautiful variety within had me jumping at every turn with the coolness.

The window displays are painstakingly beautiful.

The entrance signage indicates a little splash of fun-
But walking inside feels like a big, big splash.
I couldn’t help but think as a DIYer in the store– I’d love to make some kids artwork pillows. But for a big group of handmade artists, this store is a prized venue for showing of your work, like this pillow:

And this newspaper pup:

You can’t help but feel like a kid in a candy store. Well, in part because it is a candy store. But also because of the dinosaurs driving a taxi. So fun.

And a contender for the coolest dressing room ever.

With two child-sized mirrored corners for checking ourself out
And this guy above to check you out while you’re checking yourself out
Maybe you’re checking yourself out with this TV bag on your arm?

Admittedly, I don’t spend enough time in bookstores anymore. But the selection of books, coloring books, paper kits and puzzles was lovely.

I’d never seen this stacking rainbow toy before. Checking later online, it’s more reasonable in the store. I love when that happens.

I’m a sucker for anything made or decorated with pencils. Another thing on my DIY list, but for the non-DIY types, they’re ready to go:

Robots your thing? I know someone who’d eat it up…

Robot lamps!

I love these collage letters, too.

Pretty cool that I was SO excited about the tchotchkes I was bringing home, and I barely left the hotel.

Since I was distracted by thinking of what to actually take home to my girls and my godson who goes by JuJu and HAD to have a JouJou t-shirt, I wouldn’t say I did my best photo work. And only had a little point-and-shoot. There are a few more images here (by an Alt attendee I had dinner with on Wednesday) and here (by a SLC writer) that help fill out the feel.

And this video on The Making of a Toy Store is awesome, if a bit dizzying.

Overused word of my life. Awesome. But in other awesome news, the Alt-related conversation is mostly done and Adrianna has another “What I Made for #3” post for tomorrow!

I want to move in to this store. And I’ve almost bought that rainbow stackable for myself before. I think it would be cool craft room decor. And since my craft room is inside the playroom, I wouldn’t get confused looks.
