Sewing with little ones around? Or just want to hide power cords from sight for your own benefit? Easy! All you need is a piece of foam core board slightly larger than the opening of your sewing table or desk! After I shared this on Instagram (follow me there!) I realized that because those posts kind of melt away into forget-it-land I should probably put this in a post where it’d be find-able.
I’m not suggesting that your very clever baby who’ll eventually turn into a very clever toddler will never ever figure this out, but for at least the last 5 months my very curious baby hasn’t found the power strip, 3 sewing machine cords and one lamp cord that are hiding behind this board. Whether I’m in the middle of sewing or not she’s in and out and all around my workspace throughout the day.
To create your own sort of false back to your work space you’ll just need a piece of foam core at least as wide as your table or desk and an inch or more taller. Score and fold the top edge so that it’s just 1/2″ or so taller than the space and wedge it under there.
That’s it! No tape or glue or screws or nails or cursing required. If you wanted to get fancy you could wedge some sort of spacer behind it so that it can’t pop out the other side. So far that hasn’t been an issue here. She’s far more interested in pulling fabric out of the bins on the left.

when our sons were little & i wanted to sew-i had a box/bin of toys that they could only play with when i was sewing. :)) it kept them playing for awhile & i got some sewing done. then when they stopped playing with those toys-we put them away & i had to stop sewing then.
