I have a stunning polished ruby necklace. I realize this isn’t the “norm” as far as handmade gifts go, but my grandfather was a jeweler and he not only polished and set the stone, but he actually mined it as well! To me, handmade gifts are special first because of the sentiment that someone took the time to create something from raw materials for you, but also, as in the case of my necklace, for the heritage and heirloom quality of something in your family. My grandfather is gone now, but this necklace is precious to me and it will go to one of daughters some day.

MANY years ago when my boys were in school (kindergarten) one of my boys (I tell each of them that I’m certain it was them, but only I know which did) made a dough Christmas angel for me — she still hangs on my tree to this day. I absolutely LOVE that ornament.
