Welcome Spring Dress

April 5, 2011 By crafterhours 20 Comments

You’d think that any dress I made at this time of year would be for Easter.  But no, this isn’t her Easter dress.  It’s an “I just felt like it” dress.

I found this great thin shirting cotton at the €1/meter store.  You can’t tell in the pictures, but it is actually a soft grey and white pinstripe.
I’ve been wanting to make a simple dress with box pleats for awhile, so here you go.  Of course, I couldn’t resist putting a band of pink and white polka dots at the bottom.  Geez, you can’t really tell that from the pictures either, can you?  Just trust me.
I may have gone a little too far with my back cut-out design.  But here’s a glimpse into my brain if you want my justification: a) all that air flow is going to feel really great in a few weeks when it’s 100 degrees outside at 9 am.  and b) if you can’t wear a backless dress when you’re 4, when can you?
The little line of grey at the bottom is basically piping without any piping in it.  So simple to construct, but I think it adds a lot to the design.
I kinda want one for me.  With a back.

I’ve been contemplating doing a dress with an open circle – although smaller :-) – for my daughter. She saw one in Kelly’s Kids or somewhere that she liked…aline dress with saucer sized cut out. Can you share with us any tips?

Love the box pleats, contrasting trim, and pin stripes. The cut out back turned out really perfect.

Really cute. And I would probably marry my sewing machine too. Except sometimes it makes me really mad. Kind of like my husband. :)

I adore the back – that would be comfy for our 100 degree summers too!

So cute! I love pink and grey together and the box pleat is darling. And what sweet little chicken wings, Z has. This will be perfect for the summer and for all next year–you know, when it’s 104 ALL YEAR LONG!
