KCW Day 4: The Overachiever Knit Dress

July 19, 2013 By Adrianna 8 Comments

Today’s project was born when I was face-slapped with inspiration by GoogieMomma’s white-piped navy dress that she shared on instagram.  As I was constructing it in my brain while taking a shower (as I am wont to do), it reminded me that Amanda did a princess-seamed Skater Dress that I meant to copy.  So I smushed the two ideas together and came up with this!

I used a standard sloper to draft a princess seam bodice, and then inserted piping into the princess seams.  The dress is finished off with a half circle skirt and a button and loop closure.  Do NOT ask me why I didn’t just use Amanda’s Skater Dress.  Short answer: I’m an idiot.  Long answer: I thought I was going for a different shape and wanted to fully line the bodice so it wouldn’t have ribbing at the neck and arms, but in the end this is so similar that I could’ve easily just used her pattern and made slight alterations.  Like I said: idiot.

This dress was more time consuming than it had any business being.  By the time I dealt with fully lining the bodice and sewing with all that ornery knit piping, I didn’t even get around to pressing it before pictures.  Or at least that’s the excuse I’m using.  I used way more than the allotted 1 KCW hour.

Totally worth it though.

And bonus, she loves it!  She did request another one in pink though.  Not on your life sister.

Well, ok, maybe.  It is already drafted and all…

haha, well, that’s mostly because wordpress is distorting our pictures and we can’t figure out how to make it stop! But partly because she is getting so tall and lanky. (note to self: distort pictures of self to look tall and lanky)

you crack me up! I love how honest you are about the process. She and the dress look fabulous. If you do, do this one in pink I will have to hide the pictures form my daughter so they are not over come with envy and request one on the spot (momma don’t got time for that right now.)

Love this! Navy and white are always perfect together, and the princess seams are awesome. =) That knit piping is a major pain to install though, isn’t it?

I really love this- my daughter has recently shunned anything I’ve made her (mostly woven cotton). So I’m trying to delve into the world of knits. Wish me luck- I have no idea what I’m doing. :)
