Did you guys know this week is summer Kids Clothes Week? Because it is. And you should join in! The new KCW website is up and running and already full of tutorials and projects. Lots of your favorite bloggers have been working really hard behind the scenes to add content to the site and make it your one-stop kid’s week sewing shop. As a site member, you can save and share all your projects and check out what everyone else is working on, and you can also see a pretty conclusive list of kid’s clothing pattern makers (ahem, including ME!) so you can plan your next project. I’m so excited about where this site is going!
I made a little something for KCW yesterday, but it’s pending photography (always the hardest part of KCW if you ask me) so I thought I’d share another kids’ clothing item I made recently. I guess it doesn’t technically count for KCW since I made it 2 weeks ago, so you can go ahead and fire me.
I mentioned on Instagram awhile ago, but my daughter has a little bit of a cobbler’s son/no shoes situash going on. You see, she owns 1 dress*. Yes, just one. And she wears that exact same dress to church every single sunday, a la Laura Ingalls Wilder. It’s sad, truly. So one night the guilt overwhelmed me to the point that I finally made her something. I have a ton of dress patterns at my disposal, and the internet is loaded with instant download .pdfs, so naturally I decided to just cut around a skirt and shirt and hope it fit. Luckily it did, first try. This is not a technique that I recommend though.
It’s just a super simple dolman sleeve a-line dress. I made it a little baggy around the waist so I could add the band to cinch it in. I have been known to overdo things when it comes to girls’ dresses, but as evidenced by the fact that my daughter wears this dress every other day, simple is usually best. The easy knit t-shirt style dress is perfect for her scooter-riding, monkey-bar hanging, cartwheel-turning summer life.
This dress is so perfect that I decided to do a little unofficial and schedule-less blog event (participants included: just me) called Summer of Knits. My kids will only wear “soft” fabric anyway (slackers still haven’t learned the difference between woven and knit, gotta add that lesson to our summer learning goals), and I have an obscene amount of knit hanging out in my stash right now, and I finally kissed and made up with my coverhem machine, who is now my bff. So, really the only thing stopping me from producing three handmade knit wardrobes is those kiddos themselves. With no school, they’re at home, like, all the time.
